Bruno Ganz plays a writer at the end of his life, Alexander, who tries to complete the works of a 19th century poet as he is confronted with the ghosts of the emotions he has let slip away. He meets a child on the street, an illegal immigrant from Albania, and sets off with her on a journey to take the child home. The film, which seamlessly interweaves past and present in complex sequences, using Angelopoulos’ famous style, was awarded the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
