Winner of the Silver Bear at the Berlinale, The Pearl Button was born from Patricio Guzmán’s desire to make a film about Patagonia, the geographical region spanning the southernmost part of South America. Filmed on board a sailing boat, the documentary captures the most remote and inaccessible glaciers and mountains of Patagonia, as it traces a parallel between the thousands of “disappeared” victims of Pinochet’s dictatorship and the genocide of six ethnic groups in the south of Chile since the 19th century.
