Dogtown and Z-Boys follows the pioneering skateboarding team Zephyr — of which director Stacy Peralta was also a member — and the evolution of this sport in Southern California in the 1970s. Combining films shot by the group and current interviews, the documentary tells the history of these teenagers who started out as surfers. During a local drought that emptied almost all of the region's swimming pools, the Zephyrs jumped fences and occupied these new concave surfaces to create new, vertical skateboarding manoeuvres that would change the future of the sport forever. Narrated by Sean Penn, Dogtown and Z-Boys is a captivating portrait of a cultural movement that marked a generation.
