On National Portuguese Folklore Day, João Polido presents a listening session featuring an episode of Povo que Canta (People that Sing). The series — presented by the ethnomusicologist Michel Giacometti and shown on RTP in the 1970s — journeyed through Portugal in search of images and voices, making it one of the most important anthological collections of Portuguese popular music to date. In this programme, João Polido presents musical ideas related to the episodes on harvest workers’ songs, the religious chants of Alto Minho, and the festive songs of São João in different parts of the country. This lecture is preceded by the screening of the O S. João na Tradição Musical Popular (1972, 21') episode, dedicated to religious hymns sung during farm work and the celebration songs of São joão parties all across the country.
Featuring the musical participation of Puçanga and Violeta Azevedo. Approximate session time: 70 minutes.
