Sudesha is a countryside woman living in the Himalayas, a region exclusively dependant on the forest for all their needs of firewood, food and water. With the arrival of timber traders, Sudesha mobilizes the women in her region to protect the forest, playing an active role in Chipko, one of the first environmentalist movements in India. Defying not only the lumberjacks but also the traditional role of women in Indian society, Sudesha ends up being arrested during a protest. After the film screened, Deepa Dhanraj, cofounder of the Yugantar Film Collective, is present for a talk on the political context and the film practice of the collective.
Talk with Deepa Dhanraj and Jemma Desai (moderation) — in English with simultaneous translation.
