Through an intricate game of flashbacks and alternate perspectives, Brief Encounters follows a complex love triangle between Valya, who works in local government, her absent geologist husband, and Nadya, a country girl working as the couple’s housekeeper. This markedly feminist work was banned until the Perestroika era. Thanks to a partnership between Studio Canal, The Criterion Collection and the film laboratory L’imaginne Ritrovata, audiences now have the opportunity to rediscover the work of Kira Muratova, the Ukrainian filmmaker acclaimed by historian and critic Mark Cousins as one of the most significant directors in the history of cinema.
