Based on a short story by Herman Melville, As Ilhas Encantadas was produced by António da Cunha Telles and stars Amália Rodrigues. The story, told by a narrator (Pierre Vaneck), takes us to a deserted island in the middle of the Atlantic, where a shipwrecked crew survive by catching the giant tortoises that live there. Among the castaways are Hunila (Amália Rodrigues) and a French sailor (Pierre Clémenti), whose ambiguous relationship is interrupted by their rescue. This film was restored under the auspices of FILMar, a project run by Cinemateca Portuguesa — Museu do Cinema. The new digital copy premiered in 2023 at the Lumière Festival, as part of the Lumière Classics section.
