In this her final feature film, Mai Zetterling returns to a figure who had been pivotal to her debut feature. Where Loving Couples (1964) was an adaptation of a novel by Agnes von Krusenstjerna, Amorosa gives us the life story of the author herself. Born into nobility, Krusenstjerna scandalised 1930s Sweden with her descriptions of sexual acts and frank discussions of mental illness.
