On an imaginary island in the Atlantic, a country lord outlaws any kind of sexual contact between the inhabitants. Many years later, in an attempt to prevent the island community dying out and to guarantee his own lineage, the same lord decides to send his daughter Adriana to Lisbon to start a family the natural way. Margarida Gil skilfully inverts the classical narrative, creating an anti-utopia in which the heroine tries to escape the idyllic isle and discover, despite various obstacles, the bewitching mysteries of an unfamiliar Portugal.
