On the occasion of International Mother Language Day, which falls on 21 February, we present one of the most internationally recognised films in Bangladeshi cinema. Released a year after Bangladesh's independence (1972), the film is set in a fishing region along the Titas River in East Bengal, in present-day Bangladesh, and follows the daily lives of its inhabitants, portraying the conflict between ancestral habits and a time of intense change. The restored copy we're showing highlights the beautiful black-and-white and aesthetic rigour of what is, along with Satyajit Ray and Mrinal Sen, one of the best-known names in Bengali cinema.
At the request of the Bangladeshi community, with whom the Neighbours sessions are scheduled, the date of the screening has been changed to 18 February. Free entrance upon ticket pickup on the same day. Limited to two tickets per person.
