50 years following its release, we present this treasure of Brazilian cinema in a restoration recognised as the “best of 2023” by Film Comment. The film transports us to the Rio de Janeiro underground, where an affectionate and unscrupulous queen (Milton Gonçalves) controls a drug cartel. A plot against her prompts her to bring together her band of drag queens and allies to nip the betrayal in the bud. In this camp classic by Antonio Carlos da Fontoura, considered a milestone in Black, queer, Latin-American cinema, a razor blade is just as useful for shaving legs as it is for cutting throats.
