Programme:
Based on diary entries narrated by a young boy and interspersed with photographs taken by Ōshima during a trip to Korea in 1964, Yunbogi’s Diary is a raw portrait of post-war Seoul through the eyes of a poverty-stricken Korean child. Abandoned by his mother and responsible for his siblings, Yunbogi wanders the streets in search of food, taking on small jobs. The child’s outbursts capture innocence and resilience in Ōshima’s harsh critique of Japan’s involvement in Korea — the filmmaker confronts his country with the mess it caused during the occupation.
