In what ways can the Nazi psyche and praxis adapt and conceal itself in a democratic society? In Martha (1973), by Rainer W. Fassbinder, the contaminated trace of Nazism emerges through the power of metaphor. As a metonymic figure of this normalising process, Helmut interests us for his individual psychology and the way he relates to others (especially his wife), embodying as he does the tics of the legacy of Nazi terror. Leni Riefenstahl, Alain Resnais, Billy Wilder and Jean-Luc Godard are also all called into the operating theatre.
