Programme:
The moment when the couple in Basil Da Cunha’s film O Fim do Mundo (2019) escape for a walk in an idyllic meadow on top of a hill — nature’s last refuge for lovers on the edge of the city — brings us back to the walk taken by Júlio and Ilda in that classic of Portuguese cinema, Os Verdes Anos (1963) by Paulo Rocha. Hills are shelters for lovers, paradoxical spaces between the escapism and introspection that would mark all modern Portuguese cinema since the Cinema Novo. Reconstruction proposes a reflection on this “genealogy of hills” in European post-war cinema and in Portuguese cinema in particular.
