Programme:
Adrift in Lisbon between precarious jobs, incurable debts and tempestuous relationships, Xavier is a young adult trying his best to make his way in life. Filmed in 1991 but only premiering in 2003, Xavier became a cult film of Portuguese cinema precisely because it revealed, through the long shadow it cast, the challenges facing young Portuguese people at a time when society was opening up to consumerism. Mozos builds a film that is delicate, dark and often claustrophobic, but which also scans the face of Pedro Hestnes in a search for emotional contradictions and the hope for a new future.
