Programme:
Following the showing of the first three short films by Tomás Paula Marques – Sem Armas, Em Caso de Fogo and Cabra Cega — Batalha presents the world premiere of the film-performance When We Dead Awaken.
In an exercise of critical invention, Tomás Paula Marques and João Abreu transform the Fairy Tree – referred to in the judgement of Joan of Arc as one of the crucial pieces of evidence that proved she was a witch – into a symbol for dissident genders and sexuality. This is a collective gesture of re-making history, motivated by the desire for a prospective queer archaeology and archive.
In the exhibition space, a 16mm projection made by both artists is accompanied by a live interpretation of the roles that the two play in the film, resulting in a multiplication of the voices that can be heard both inside and outside the screen. Via the ritual of projecting images, When We Dead Awaken reflects on the almost complete absence of LGBTQI+ representation in historical research, as well as on the role of the physical medium of film in the post-digital era.
