Programme:
Based on real events reported in the newspapers in 1966, Boy denounces the effects of capitalism and the moral degradation of post-war Japanese society through a family tragedy. Toshio, aged 10, is used by his parents in a scam consisting of staging car accidents to extort money from drivers. While the family crosses Japan to escape the law, the boy escapes into an imaginary world where aliens will free him from his harrowing daily life. Considered one of Ōshima’s cult works, this docudrama, marked by the stylistic experimentations of the Japanese Nouvelle Vague, uses acid humour to tell the story of a stolen childhood.
