A successful optometrist called Hortense (Marianne Jean-Baptiste) loses her adoptive mother, and decides to seek out her biological mother. Hortense, a woman of colour, is shocked to discover that her woman is white. Cynthia (Brenda Blethyn) first denies Hortense, but the two begins to build a bond. A story of hope, redemption and the victory of love above all else, it is surprising to learn that the Heaven’s Gate religious cult chose this British film as their last, watching it at a San Diego cinema only a few days before their (well documented) mass suicide.
