Premiering at Curtas de Vila de Conde, Ana Mariz’s second film follows Matilde, a six-year-old girl who spends her time playing on an agricultural property while imagining she is elsewhere. With no one to play with, Matilde doesn’t understand the adults or their worries, as she creates her own world where everything is perfect like in the cinema. She puts on make-up, paints her nails and wears eccentric clothes, letting her imagination take flight. Matilde Olha para Trás turns an attentive, sensitive gaze on childhood and its importance as an agent of change in the world.
