Programme:
Isaac Julien’s debut solo feature film, Young Soul Rebels is a fascinating look at British culture and identity at the end of the 1970s. Taking place in the week of Queen Elizabeth’s Silver Jubilee, the film centres on Caz and Chris, childhood friends who together manage the pirate radio station Soul Patrol, run out of a garage in London’s East End. When a mutual friend is murdered, Chris is arrested for the crime. This daring work aims to conciliate Black and punk cultures, taking the desire between two men as its starting point.
