In his penultimate film, and also his first feature made in digital format, Paulo Rocha counted on a screenplay by Regina Guimarães and performances from Isabel Ruth and Joana Bárcia to bring to life Nélia, a stylist at the peak of her career. Nélia falls in love with the daughter of one of the seamstresses in her studio, and launches her into the world of fashion. Despite being idealised by those around her, the model suffers from a deep self-loathing that seems to condemn her to an ominous fate. Shot entirely in Porto, with scenes set in the Ribeira neighbourhood and at the Hard Club, Vanitas illustrates the historical and prolific relationship between the world of fashion and cinematic genres like suspense and horror.
