Alice Rohrwacher's first feature in collaboration with Pier Paolo Giarolo follows Petra, Stefan and their children, who run a small travelling circus featuring a handful of animals. The family journeys through Italian villages entertaining the local children. Soon they will leave for Hungry, in search of new places and audiences. Rohrwacher and Giarolo lift the curtain on this fantastical world, which looks like it was invented by Fellini, offering a reflection on the nomadic lifestyle and the search for a life that is truly free. This film subtly captures the Solunas family’s determination, touching on the principal themes of the director’s later work.
