Programme:
Following the daily routine of two deaf dockworkers surviving in London’s East End, Mazzetti creates a poetic and desolate representation of the lived isolation of the post-war British capital. The film focusses on the vulnerability of the most fragile elements of society, evoking the director’s own experience as a stranger in the country and her close relationship with her twin sister. Together was shown in the National Film Theatre as part of the Free Cinema movement’s first programme and, in the same year, received a prize at Cannes. The film ended up driving the movement it was part of, shining most brightly at festivals and obtaining the widest recognition nationally and internationally.
