Programme:
Anne Frank’s thirteenth birthday was a good one: “I got a blue blouse, a game, a bottle of grape juice, a puzzle, a jar of cold cream, 2.50 guilders and a gift certificate for two books... A platter of homemade cookies, lots of candy and a strawberry tart... two brooches, a bookmark and two books.” Most crucially, perhaps, she also got an autograph book, bound with red and white checkered cloth, with a small lock and key. It is in this book that she records her birthday, and the “Rin Tin Tin movie” (The Lighthouse by the Sea) rented out specially for her party. The Diary of a Young Girl goes on to record the period of hiding forced on the Frank family only weeks later, by the Nazi occupation of The Netherlands.
