In Shrines, Jacob Satterwhite brings together elements from virtual reality games with the documentation of a performance from 2009 to form the final chapter of the series Birds in Paradise (2018–2020). With references to The Incredulity of Saint Thomas by Caravaggio, iconic musical figures from The Prodigy to Dev Hynes and images of KKK rituals, the artist draws on the performance culture of the Yoruba to approach themes of the body, sexuality and North American popular culture. As spectators, we are introduced to queer aesthetics — also visible in the costumes — through a language demarcated by monumental visual and sonic scenarios.
