Programme:
Almodóvar’s first commercial release, Pepi, Luci, Bom was a pioneering cult film and a symbol of the cultural and sexual revolution in Madrid, the Movida. Filmed in 16mm, it immortalised a crucial moment in Spanish history, starring prominent figures from Madrid’s underground scene, such as Alaska. The fierce female trio at the centre of this defiant black comedy take on the heteronormative machismo of 1980s Spain with an explosive mixture of sex, drugs and rock n roll, which continues to shock audiences to this day. One of the most provocative and widely recognised films from the post-Francoist era, this film shows Almodóvar’s dedication to telling transgressive stories.
