Programme:
Noémia Delgado helmed an unusual project in Portuguese cinema: the television series Contos Fantásticos, which, as the name indicates, drew on the literary world through seven telefilms adapted from famous written works of fantasy. In O Visconde, the third film in the series, Noémia adapts Os Canibais (1865–68), by author Álvaro do Carvalhal, a short story published posthumously and which was also the basis for Manoel de Oliveira’s film-opera of 1988. At the centre of this Rocambolesque story is the Viscount of Aveleda, who harbours a strange fascination for the young Margarida while also guarding a dark secret.
