Mal di Mare begins with a question that João Vieira Torres addresses to white visitors to the Venice Biennale, as they view an exhibition featuring works by Black artists: “How many people of colour are there in this room?” The Brazilian filmmaker’s short film weaves together oneiric terrain (a devotional ritual to the goddess of the sea, a nightmare about ancestral violence) and the real world (systemic racism and white supremacy in the art world).
