Inspired by a sinister real-life story, Dead Ringers revolves around identical twin gynaecologists Elliot and Beverly Mantle (Jeremy Irons), who believe they are fated to share all of their experiences. When the relationship between the two sours over a woman, they try and free themselves from each other, but the situation spins out of control. Less explicit than usual for Cronenberg, but with a highly tuned aesthetic and photography, the film is driven by psychological scarring that makes it as sordid and creepy as ever.
