Programme:
Based on the novel of the same name by Mário Zambujal, this Crónica dos Bons Malandros, adapted by Fernando Lopes, introduces us to a certain Lisbon from the early 1980s, with its vibrant sets and wardrobe indicating a certain post-modern kitsch. Using musical-comedy, Lopes tells the story of a gang that wants to mount a robbery at the Gulbenkian Foundation, to steal some precious stones. Characteristic of the director’s ongoing experimentation, the film traverses several genres, citing Hollywood musicals and the Nouvelle Vague to depict the “malandro”, a mythical figure in the urban landscape of Lisbon: a petty thief, deeply misogynistic and always in trouble.
