Programme:
Deploying multiple exposures and superimposed images, this film by the Australian duo Dianne Barrie and Richard Tuoby explores identity, impermanence and geopolitical transitions. The film focusses on the 20th anniversary of the handover of Hong Kong from the UK to China, which marked the midpoint of the “one country, two systems” policy. The film places Hong Kong’s liminal state in counterpoint with the history of Taiwan as part of imperial China. Through abstract representations of urban scenes, it creates a fluid, almost dreamlike exploration of the mutable boundaries between “China” and “not China”, reflecting on the complex cultural and political contexts of the region.
