Commissioned by the Eye Film Institute in Amsterdam, this short film takes the form of an interview between a surgeon and a panicked patient who wants to remove her left breast. Filmed from the point of view of the doctor’s gaze, who we never see but hear (played by Cronenberg himself), this technically simple, low-budget film uses dialogue to evoke images that overwhelm the viewer without showing anything concrete. The Nest suggests a delicate intimacy, desexualised and as uncomfortable as usual for Cronenberg.
