Programme:
Kustom Kar Kommandos was intended to be a feature film focussing on cars as fetish objects for young Americans, but when his funding ran out Kenneth Anger ended up creating a kind of poem dedicated to these machines instead. In front of a pink background, we see a boy lovingly polishing his car. With slow camera movements and vivid colours, to the sound of “Dream Lover” by The Paris Sisters, the filmmaker paints a portrait of heightened eroticism, which functions simultaneously as social commentary on America in the 1960s.
