Programme:
The island of Bangka accounts for one third of the world’s extraction of tin. Due to its high conductivity and low melting point, tin is used widely in the manufacture of electronic components found in products like mobile telephones and computers. Taking the perspective of an A.I. named Natasha, this film ponders the materiality of seemingly intangible technologies as a feature of neocolonialism. Conceived and produced entirely on the island, this essay film traces the genealogy of tin, its importance for the indigenous population and the capitalist labour dynamics of its production today.
