Shot on an extremely low budget, Cronenberg’s second film, made when the director was only 24, consists of a single scenario: a bathtub occupied by two men who are implied to be war veterans now living in a mental institution. One of the men is happy and talkative; the other is paranoid and nervous, insisting on placing a cover on the plughole to prevent tendril-like organisms from growing up from beneath.
