Programme:
Faria de Almeida’s cinematic portrait of the working class neighbourhood of Catembe, Maputo (then named Lourenço Marques), portrays the city and its outskirts a few months on from the beginning of the colonial war. Through testimonies and a tone of comic caricature, the film reveals the asymmetry between the daily lives of the white settlers and the Black population. With a narrative far from the one of harmonious and praiseworthy colonial progress promoted by the dictatorship, Catembe would be severely mutilated by the censors, leaving only this highly polished version. (In this screening at Batalha, a sequence will be added with some of the cuts that did not make it into the final version.)
