Over the course of history, territories are overtaken by successive layers. On top of the bones of each extinct civilisation is born a new one to substitute it, often deliberately erasing it to build new societies. On the periphery of today’s Lisbon, the slums have disappeared — and with them their memory — having been substituted by social housing. Karlon, a pioneer of creole rap born in the Pedreira dos Húngaros slum, escapes from the neighbourhood o which he has been rehoused and goes to the non-urbanised outskirts, rejecting any kind of erasure and denouncing society’s oppression and its conventions of individual liberty.
