Carlos Conceição is among the most iconoclastic of Portuguese filmmakers, with a diverse oeuvre in the field of short films. Born in Angola, he has long been interested in the theme of Africa and, in Acorda, Leviatã, he presented the first chapter of what would culminate in his debut feature, Serpentário (2019). Shooting on film, Conceição explores the fantasies of a certain gaze bewitched by the colours and landscapes of Africa. By also mixing in a science fiction sequence, the filmmaker plays with a double gaze: on the one hand, alien and colonial; on the other, profound and connected emotionally to a space that reaches beyond him.
