Director and producer, Marta Sousa Ribeiro studied film at the Lisbon Theatre and Film School and the European Film College (Denmark). She directed her first short film when taking a break from her degree in Lisbon and studying drawing and painting at Ar.Co. In 2013, she co-founded the production company VIDEOLOTION, through which she has produced several projects including Damned Summer (2017) by Pedro Cabeleira, an influential film for the current generation of emerging Portuguese filmmakers.

Interested in the complexity and emotional violence of adolescence, Marta Sousa Ribeiro spent five years directing a project on this subject, Simon Calls (2020). After premiering at the San Sebastian festival, the film won the Best Director at IndieLisboa. The semi-autobiographical work follows the growth of its main actor.

The first season of New Moons thus ends with a feature-length film, the only one of the series and a real case study of Portuguese cinema when it comes to independent production and artistic discovery.
