Directed by a woman and with an entirely female cast, Girls in Uniform is a pioneering work and a landmark in queer cinema for the manner in which it explores lesbian desire. After her mother dies, teenaged Manuela is sent to a boarding school for girls where she develops feelings for her young teacher. The closeness between the two turns into a romantic connection, leading to a scandal with devastating consequences. Combining stylistic elements of German expressionism with naturalistic performances, rare for the time, Sagan sensitively and masterfully evokes the tension of prohibited love.
